For some time now we’ve been talking about this late-model revival that seems to be creeping into the UK scene, so I hope you guys will agree and indeed enjoy the feature on Simon Fox’s awesome Resto-Cal Marathon Bug. Sometimes referred to by our American cousins as ‘Fat Chicks’, why is it that these late model cars are often given such a hard time? For many enthusiasts (myself included), a late-model was the perfect introduction to VW ownership as they are primarily cheaper than early cars, but often more usable, too. Twin-speed wipers, fully synchromesh transmissions, 12-volt electrics, disc brakes – there are no such luxuries on that ’54 Oval you’ve just been drooling over! In comparison to an early stocker, these later cars are a real treat to drive, and clearly make for great daily driver material. Over the next few months we’ll be looking at a few more cool late-model rides, and I hope they’ll serve to influnece a few new or younger readers to check out these more affordable models when looking for a new project or daily driver.
